Uganda Rugby Union has announced the squad for the upcoming World Rugby Sevens Challenger series set to kick off in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Among the notable inclusions is Phillip Wokorach, who represents French side AS Bédarrides.

Wokorach, a key player in the Ugandan setup, missed the opening round of the 2024 Challenger Series in Dubai last January, where the team finished ninth, due to a busy schedule with his club.

Norbert Okeny (who was injured in January) and Timothy Mugisha also missed the Dubai event but have been summoned for the Montevideo leg.

However, some familiar faces from the Dubai event, namely Davis Shimwa, William Nkore, and Roy Kizito, have not made the cut this time, as coach Tolbert Onyango reshuffles the squad.

The team is scheduled to depart on Sunday, March 3rd, 2024, for Uruguay, the Union has revealed.

Following the Montevideo leg, the squad will head to Ghana for the All Africa Games, slated from March 8th to 23rd in Accra. Additional players who didn’t initially make the squad for Montevideo will join the team for the Ghana event.

In Montevideo, Uganda finds itself in Pool C, competing against Germany, Papua New Guinea, and hosts Uruguay.

The World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger series serves as a pathway to promotion for the HSBC Sevens. The top four placed men’s and women’s teams in the Challenger series will secure a spot in the promotion and relegation playoff competition at the SVNS Grand Final in Madrid.

Uganda Sevens Squad:

Adrian Kasito, Norbert Okeny, Aaron Ofoyrwoth, Isaac Massanganzira, Philip Wokorach, Desire Ayera, Ian Munyani, Alex Aturinda, Pius Ogena, Timothy Mugisha, Denis Etwau, Timothy Kisiga
