The opposition Democratic Party has asked citizens to support the planned relocation of Luzira prison from the city center to Buikwe, emphasizing that this move aims to improve public safety.
The call comes after government announced to relocate Luzira Prison to Buikwe District to allow a Chinese investor under Tian Tang group to set up a luxurious five-star hotel on Luzira land.
While addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, the press Secretary to DP president, Herbert Mwesigwa said that relocating Uganda’s maximum prison to a more remote area could potentially contribute to a reduction overcrowding of inmates.
Mwesigwa further highlighted the broader vision of city development, stating that freeing up the prime city center land currently occupied by Luzira prison could pave way for various projects aimed at developing the country’s economy.

Pointing out the recent deadly prison escape in Mexico, Mwesigwa said having prisons in more concentrated areas like Kampala is disastrous to the population. He called for citizenry support for relocation of Luzira noting that it will save suspects of pet crimes such as city vendors who are always remanded to Luzira to receive justice.
