A Police Officer who allegedly impounded and stole a motor cycle belonging boda boda rider Samuel Walusimbi during normal traffic work under the pretext of delivering it to Kampala Central Police Station has been remanded to Luzira Prison on charges of theft.
Police Constable Micheal Ahabwe aged 37, on Tuesday afternoon appeared before Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha and denied the charges against him.
He was then remanded to Luzira Prison until March 11th 2024 for mention after the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions led by State Attorney Lydia Nakato informed the Court that the investigations are still ongoing.
Prosecution alleges that Ahabwe, attached to Amolatar police station and resident of Andrews village in Kakiika Ward in Mbarara District committed the offence on 4th March 2022 at New Master Stage Equatorial Mall Bombo Road in Kampala when he stole stole motorcycle UFF 262A Bajaj boxer valued at sh5 million, property of Walusimbi Wasswa.
According to the records before Court, Ahabwe is facing another separate case on file, of theft of rail bars and a metallic small gate valued at one Million Shillings, property of Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd- UETCl.
While addressing journalists on Monday, the Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said that after stealing the motor cycle, Ahabwe deserted and went and got a job in SGA security firm as security guard.
Enanga explained that Ahabwe’s new job was short lived after he stole UETCL property.
Trouble for Ahabwe started when SGA reported the case to police that their employee had stolen property at his deployment station. Police started investigations and found out when he is one of their own who has been on run after stealing a motorcycle in Kampala.
