President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has lauded the late President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, as a unifier and dedicated leader. Speaking at the Iranian Embassy in Kampala, on Wednesday, President Museveni reflected on Raisi’s recent visit to Uganda, emphasizing his commitment and efforts to foster unity.

“When His Excellency visited us recently, I could see that he was a very dedicated person but also a unifier,” Museveni said. He recounted how Raisi visited various projects and the Old Kampala Mosque late into the night, illustrating his dedication and belief in unity.

The tribute came in the wake of the tragic death of President Raisi, who, along with Iran’s Foreign Minister Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and several officials, perished in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024. The officials were returning from the inauguration of the Qiz-Qalasi Dam, a joint Iran-Azerbaijan project.

President Museveni expressed shock at the news, noting Raisi’s active diplomatic engagements across the globe. “He was a very active person,” Museveni remarked. “You should put that picture where he was with the Mufti and the Archbishop on social media. It is very important; it’s a legacy for His Excellency, Raisi. May his Soul Rest In Eternal Peace.”

Museveni assured the Iranian people of Uganda’s solidarity during this difficult time and pledged continued cooperation between the two nations. “We have been dealing with Iranian leaders ever since we came into government,” he stated.

Iranian Ambassador to Uganda, Majid Saffar, thanked President Museveni for his support, highlighting the deep bonds of friendship between Uganda and Iran.

“Your support means a great deal to the Iranian people,” Ambassador Saffar said. He praised Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian for their dedication and visionary leadership.

In honor of the fallen leaders, the Supreme Leader of Iran has declared five days of national mourning. The First Vice-President, Mohammad Mokhber, has assumed presidential duties until new elections are held, while Ali Bagheri Kani has been appointed acting Foreign Minister.

The ceremony was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, and other officials.
