Police in Serere district have detained Mercy Iyogil, a teacher at Olio Primary School, on suspicion of murdering her boyfriend, a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier.
The deceased, Michael Ojakol, also known as Ojakoro, was found hanging from a mango tree within the school compound following an alleged dispute with Iyogil over suspected infidelity.
Ojakol was attached to the 150th Artillery Brigade deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to the South Kyoga regional police spokesperson, ASP Stephen Mukombe, Ojakol was on pass leave at his home in Agoltom village, Serere district, at the time of his death.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on the evening of June 2, a disagreement arose between Ojakol and Iyogil. The couple reportedly sought mediation from the school’s head teacher, who handled the matter from his office.
Mukombe said the dispute was resolved during the meeting, after which Iyogil allegedly gave Ojakol Shs 100,000 to facilitate his return to his duty station.
After leaving the school premises, Ojakol was believed to have departed for his workplace. However, his body was discovered the following morning, June 3, hanging from a mango tree in the school gardens by Dominique Oba, a resident of the area.
Detectives later visited the scene, documented evidence and transferred the body to Serere Hospital for a postmortem examination. Mukombe said preliminary postmortem findings pointed to possible foul play.
“The postmortem report indicates that the deceased was killed before his body was suspended on the tree. The body had also been tied several times,” he said.
Police have since detained Iyogil to assist with ongoing investigations as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death. Mukombe appealed to members of the public with information that could aid the investigation to report to Serere Central Police Station.
