As Uganda with the rest of the world commemorated World Environment Day Ugandans are being urged to abandon the use of single use plastics as they are direct agents of soil degradation.
The call was made by the Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority Dr Barirega Akankwasah as Uganda observed world Environment day.
This global event was established in 1972 during the United Nations Conference on the Humar Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden.
Over the years, World Environment Day has grown into the largest global, platform for environmental awareness and action, now observed in more than 150 countries worldwide,
The day provides Nations with an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made in protecting and conserving our environment, renew our commitment to environmental stewardship, and take practical actions to safeguard our natural resources for present and future generations.
This year, Uganda commemorated World Environment Day under the national theme:”Climate Action Begins with _You: Act Now.”
The national celebrations were hosted by Adjumani District but were observed at the National Environment Management Authority HQs due to the cancellation of public gatherings as a result of a health risk related to Ebola outbreak.
Dr. Akankwasah says to observe the years activities, every part of the country should engage in tree planting across the country.

Activities to mark the occasion in Adjumani District and across the country comprised of tree planting and ecosystem restoration initiatives aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and strengthening resilience to climate change.
West Nile hosts the largest refugee population in Uganda. Adjumani District alone hosts more than 200,000 refugees. This has placed significant pressure on natural resources, including forests, wetlands, and water sources.
At the same event, William Lubuulwa, a senior public relations officer at the National Environment Management Authority has commended the media for positive reporting on environment matters and educating the public on sustainable use of the environment.
