The Uganda National Netball team, the She Cranes, has climbed to sixth place in the latest World Netball Rankings released by World Netball (WN).
The rankings, updated annually, aim to reflect the current form of international teams based on their recent performances.
The latest rankings consider all matches played since July 1, 2020, with more weight given to matches played in the last year, particularly since March 1, 2023. Matches played between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, including those from the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019, have been dropped from the rankings.
The She Cranes’ ascent to sixth place sees them surpassing Malawi in the rankings, showcasing their steady progress on the international stage.
Despite challenges at home, with the Uganda Netball Federation suspended by the World Netball body, the team has demonstrated resilience and skill.
Currently, there is no local netball league ongoing in Uganda, with efforts underway by the newly formed Normalisation Committee to organize elections and restore stability within the local netball governing body.
Recent victories against Wales, where the She Cranes claimed a three-match series in Cardiff with a 2-1 triumph, highlight the team’s potential and determination.
However, their participation in the 2024 Netball Vitality Nations Cup in England saw them facing formidable opponents, losing all matches against hosts England, Australia, and New Zealand, albeit with commendable performances.
At the top of the rankings, Australia maintains its dominance, extending its lead over second-placed New Zealand. The Diamonds’ recent successes, including victories at the Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022 and the Netball World Cup 2023, contribute to their continued stronghold in the sport.
Meanwhile, England and Jamaica have narrowed the gap on New Zealand, with both teams now just two rating points behind the Silver Ferns, showcasing the competitiveness among the top-ranked nations in world netball.
