Rebecca Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, expressed commendation towards the Somali Government for fulfilling the necessary requirements to join the East African Community (EAC) regional bloc. Kadaga conveyed her congratulations to the Somalia Government for swiftly meeting the conditions for EAC membership, speaking on behalf of the Ministry of East African Community Affairs.

Somalia’s admission into the EAC in November of the previous year marked a significant expansion of the regional bloc, elevating its membership to eight countries. Despite this milestone, Somalia had yet to fulfill all the stipulated requirements for joining the bloc, prompting further efforts to align with EAC standards.

Among the key prerequisites met by Somalia was the establishment of a shared border with Kenya, a crucial criterion for EAC membership. This accomplishment underscores Somalia’s commitment to integration within the East African region and its dedication to fulfilling the obligations associated with EAC partnership.

The East African Community, founded in 1999 as a regional intergovernmental organization, operates under the guidance of its Treaty established in 2000, which delineates the framework for cooperation and integration among member states. Over the years, the EAC has worked towards fostering economic growth and development by facilitating initiatives such as the elimination of customs duties among partner states and the establishment of a common market in 2010.

With its headquarters situated in Arusha, Tanzania, the EAC serves as a platform for widening and deepening cooperation among its member states across various spheres, including political, economic, and social domains. As one of the fastest-growing regional economic blocs globally, the EAC continues to prioritize collaborative efforts aimed at advancing the collective interests and prosperity of its constituent countries.
