For decades, Ugandan rugby clubs have chased the elusive dream of regional dominance.
Now, the Stanbic Black Pirates stand on the brink of history. The Pirates have unveiled a strong 26-man squad for Saturday (May 30)’s Enterprise Cup final against Kenya’s Kabras Sugar RFC in Nairobi, a contest that represents far more than silverware.
It is a defining moment for Ugandan club rugby. Led by captain Isaac Massanganzira and vice-captains Frank Kidega, Alex Aturinda, and Conrad Wanyama, the Pirates carry the hopes of a nation eager to see a Ugandan side conquer East Africa’s premier club competition.

The squad was officially flagged off during the “Twende Nairobi” fans and sponsors event hosted by Stanbic Bank Uganda at Sisha Nyama Village in Kampala.
Stanbic Bank executive director Sam Mwogeza described the achievement as a landmark for Ugandan sport, noting that no Ugandan club has reached the Enterprise Cup final in more than 50 years.
Head coach Mervin Odongo believes the occasion transcends club loyalty. “This final is bigger than the Pirates badge,” Odongo said.
With experienced forwards Eliphaz Emong, Sunday Jaguar, Nathan Bwambale, and Samuel Lubwama expected to anchor the pack, and backs Frank Kidega, John Paul Atim, Humphrey Tashobya, and Mubarak Wandera providing attacking spark, the Pirates head to Nairobi determined to complete a historic journey.
