Uganda’s hospitality industry is entering a new phase of competitiveness and quality, following the release of the latest national hotel grading report by the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB).
More than just a ranking, the classification signals a deliberate push by government to professionalise the sector, attract high-value travellers, and position Uganda as a serious player on the global tourism stage.
At the top of the pyramid, premium establishments such as Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo and Kampala Serena Hotel headline the five-star category—setting the benchmark for luxury, service excellence, and international standards. They are joined by Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa and Sheraton Kampala Hotel, reinforcing Kampala and its surroundings as the country’s high-end hospitality hub.
Beyond Rankings: A Strategic Industry Shift
The grading exercise, conducted under the Tourism Act 2008, is part of a broader strategy to bring consistency and credibility to Uganda’s accommodation sector.
Tourism remains one of Uganda’s leading foreign exchange earners, supporting thousands of jobs—from hotel staff and tour guides to farmers and transport operators. By standardising service levels, UTB aims to build investor confidence while ensuring visitors receive predictable, high-quality experiences across the country.
A Growing Middle Tier Reflects Market Demand
While the five-star segment showcases prestige, it is the four-star category that tells the real story of growth and diversification. Hotels such as Four Points by Sheraton Kampala, Golden Tulip Canaan Kampala, and Hilton Garden Inn Kampala highlight rising international investment in the capital.
At the same time, upcountry destinations are gaining ground. Properties like Arcadia Lodge Lake Bunyonyi and Emburara Farm Lodge reflect a growing appetite for nature-based and experiential tourism—key to Uganda’s brand as the “Pearl of Africa.”
Regional Tourism Hubs Come Into Focus
The three- and two-star segments reveal an even broader transformation: tourism is no longer confined to Kampala or Entebbe. Facilities such as Mount Gahinga Lodge and Mahogany Springs Lodge underscore the importance of conservation tourism, particularly around gorilla trekking circuits.
Meanwhile, accessible and mid-range options like Fairway Hotel, Forest Cottages, and ONOMO Hotel Kampala ensure that a wider range of travellers from business visitors to backpackers can navigate the country with confidence.
Officials say the grading system is designed not just to inform travellers, but to push the entire industry upward. Hotels now have clearer incentives to upgrade facilities, train staff, and align with global benchmarks.
For investors, the message is equally clear: Uganda’s tourism sector is organising itself, improving transparency, and preparing for growth.
And for travellers, the takeaway is simple whether luxury seeker or budget explorer, Uganda is becoming easier to explore, with quality you can trust.
