LETTING THE POLITICAL RAT OUT OF THE BAG; No longer a Silent Majority but a loud mouth for the NRM
×
By Sam T. Kanyamukiza
There is a season for silence, and there is a season for absolute clarity. For some time now, the political corridors of Kigezi and beyond have been thick with speculation. “Does Sam have a party?” the critics whisper. “Where does the loyalty of the man with the silver tongue truly reside?”
Today, I am letting the political rat out of the bag.
A Pedigree of Service and Sacrifice
My political DNA was not formed in a vacuum, nor was it birthed from mere ambition. I am Sam T. Kanyamukiza, the son of the late Stephen Kanyamukiza—a man of profound legacy whose name I carry with immense pride. My late father was a distinguished administrator in the DMO’s office during the eras of Obote and Amin. He was a staunch UPC stalwart who possessed a rare brand of political courage; when the UPC opted out of the national elections during the Constituent Assembly (CA) era, he refused to let his constituency be silenced. Instead, he braved the political waters on a DP ticket to ensure the flame of leadership remained lit. While he passed on in 1998, his spirit of defiant public service remains my North Star. I am the third of six children, and the only one who answered the call to walk the high-stakes path of politics that he blazed before me.

My Political Evolution
My journey has been one of rigorous growth and frontline experience. I was scouted into the NRM youth leadership as early as the year 2000, mentored by the likes of Mrs. Beatrice Twayaga of Nyabikoni ward, Madam Serucaca, Mr. and Mrs. Kateiguta of Nyakambu, Mr. Twine of the Kabale Media Centre (RIP), and the late Chairman Jimmy Besigye (RIP). In those formative years, we were already the boots on the ground—running behind campaign trucks and singing the political slogans of Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and President Museveni.
As I matured, my path took me through the various ideological landscapes of our nation. I observed the fire of FDC’s young activists in Nakawa and later, drawn by my father’s historical roots, I assumed the Vice-Chairmanship of the UPC in the Kigezi sub-region under Jimmy Akena. In 2021, I contested for the Mayorship of Kabale Municipality, achieving a historic milestone by mobilizing the highest number of contestants the UPC had ever seen in Kigezi. However, seeing a lack of aggressive ambition within those ranks, I formally resigned in 2022 to return to the fold where I truly belong.
The Silent Cadre with a Loud Mouth
My return to the NRM was paved by intellectual recognition. The then Kabale RDC, Mr. Darius Nandinda, was drawn to my political research and writing skills, eventually introducing me to the venerable Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, who encouraged my homecoming. Since then, I have been a ground cadre working and encouraged by stalwarts like Mr. Amos Rwansheija (NRM Administrator), Mr. Maurice Keitaba (NRM Returning Officer), Madam Peace Kakyira, and Edison Political.
To those who suggest I am “party-less,” let me correct the record: I am a premier political operative working on the frontlines.
Here’s what I’ve been up to:
– I was invited by the Office of the RDC to attend specialized Uganda Media Centre trainings as a leading media influencer.
– I have authored critical content for the NRM office in Event Celebratory Magazines and handled professional Public Relations for top-tier NRM Cadres.
– I remain a consistent, sharp-witted voice on radio talk shows, used to dismantle wrong narratives and guide public discourse.
– In the 2026 elections, I have been openly and aggressively soliciting votes for NRM candidates at both Parliamentary and Local Government levels.
What I Have Brought to the NRM
I am part of the “grassroots majority”—those who work tirelessly to promote the NRM’s ideals while possessing the intellectual depth to navigate the complex geo-politics of our region. I bring a unique value proposition: I have been in the boardrooms of the opposition, I understand their playbooks, and I have the rhetorical power to dismantle them.
I am no longer just a silent partner but a talking one.
The bag is open. My colors are clear. I am home, and I am at work.
Allow me to end this piece by wishing President Museveni a successful swearing-in on the 12th of May, 2026.
