Pepsi UFL: Kampala University Settled for a Bronze

By Kayiira Jackson
Kampala University secured third place in the 2026 University Football League (UFL) after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over St. Lawrence University in the playoff at Hamz Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
A late strike from Kiwewa Raymond proved decisive, as he netted in the 84th minute to hand Kampala University the bronze medal. The forward’s composed finish capped a tense contest in which both sides had struggled to break the deadlock for much of the game.

The match began cautiously, with neither team able to assert dominance in the opening half. Both Kampala University, popularly known as “the Original,” and St. Lawrence showed defensive discipline, cancelling each other out and heading into the break level.
After halftime, the intensity increased as both teams pushed for a breakthrough. Chances remained limited, however, with defences largely on top. Just when the game appeared destined for extra time, Kiwewa stepped up to deliver the decisive moment, converting late to separate the two sides.

St. Lawrence responded with urgency in the closing stages and nearly found an equalizer in stoppage time. Kalanda Julius came closest, but his header drifted onto the roof of the net, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the Saints.
The result marked a strong finish for Kampala University, who bounced back from a narrow 6-5 semifinal defeat to YMCA to end their campaign on a high note. Their resilience throughout the season was rewarded with a podium finish.

For St. Lawrence University, the defeat capped a challenging season. Having also fallen 3-1 to Muteesa I Royal University in the semifinals, the Saints were unable to find consistency and missed out on a place among the top three.
Kampala University’s victory not only secured bronze but also reaffirmed their competitive edge in university football, as they closed the 2025/26 UFL campaign with pride.
