Veteran statesman, former Deputy Prime Minister and long-serving legislator Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali dies at 86 as tributes begin to emerge.

KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda is awaiting an official government announcement following widespread reports that Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, one of the country’s longest-serving military commanders, former Deputy Prime Minister, and veteran parliamentarian, passed away on Saturday evening at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. He was 86.
According to information received by Daily Thinkers from family sources, Gen. Moses Ali is reported to have died at approximately 4:25 p.m. A family member, who requested anonymity because she was not authorized to speak publicly on behalf of the family, confirmed the development, noting that relatives were gathering at the hospital ahead of an official announcement.
A source within the Office of the Prime Minister, also speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the Government was expected to issue a formal statement once family consultations had been concluded. As of the time of publication, neither the Government of Uganda nor Parliament had released an official communication confirming the reports. Daily Thinkers will continue to monitor developments and update this story as verified information becomes available.
Uganda will be bidding farewell to one of the most enduring figures in its post-independence political and military history. Gen. Moses Ali dedicated more than five decades to public service, occupying senior positions in both government and the military. Throughout his career, he became closely associated with national security, governance, reconstruction, and public administration, particularly in Uganda’s West Nile sub-region.
Since 1996, he served continuously as a Member of Parliament, initially representing East Moyo County. Following the creation of new constituencies ahead of the 2011 General Election, he became the Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County, retaining the seat through subsequent elections in 2011, 2016, 2021, and 2026. His long parliamentary service was complemented by appointments as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in several government portfolios, where he played roles in national policy implementation, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery. Although official state tributes had not yet been issued at the time of publication, messages of condolence had already begun circulating from political leaders and members of the public.
Among the first was Captain Mike Mukula, who described Gen. Moses Ali as “a distinguished patriot, freedom fighter, and elder statesman” whose contribution to Uganda’s peace, national unity, stability, and reconstruction would remain permanently engraved in the country’s history. Captain Mukula extended condolences to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Government of Uganda, the bereaved family, the people of Adjumani District, the wider West Nile sub-region, and all Ugandans mourning what he described as an immense national loss. He praised the veteran leader’s courage, humility, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to public service, saying his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
Gen. Moses Ali’s public life reflected many of the defining chapters of Uganda’s contemporary political journey. Admired by supporters for his longevity in leadership and his continued participation in public affairs well into his eighties, he remained one of Uganda’s most recognisable political figures. His career witnessed successive political transitions while maintaining an enduring presence within national governance. His reported passing comes at a time when Uganda continues to reflect on the contributions of a generation of leaders who shaped the country’s institutions, security architecture, and post-conflict recovery.
As news of the reported death spread, many Ugandans, particularly within the Muslim community, shared the Qur’anic verse traditionally recited upon the death of a believer: “Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn” “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.” (Qur’an 2:156). The verse expresses the Islamic understanding of life’s temporary nature while offering consolation to those mourning the loss of a loved one.

At the time this article was published, official government communication regarding state tributes, parliamentary proceedings, funeral arrangements, and burial programmes had not yet been released. Daily Thinkers will continue to follow this developing story and provide you with verified updates as announcements are made by the Government of Uganda, Parliament, and the family.
