A total of 113 lawyers have officially been enrolled as Advocates of the High Court in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court Conference Hall in Kampala, marking a significant milestone in their legal careers.
The ceremony was presided over by Her Worship Beatrice Stella Atingu, Registrar in charge of Special Duties at the High Court, who represented the Acting Chief Registrar, Her Worship Lamunu Pamella Ocaya. Delivering remarks on behalf of the Acting Chief Registrar, Atingu described the occasion as both a blessing and a testament to perseverance, attributing the achievement to divine guidance.
She congratulated the newly enrolled advocates on joining the legal profession, emphasizing that while the field carries prestige and influence, it equally demands integrity and responsibility. “The legal profession is not only about status but about service,” she noted, urging the advocates to uphold the highest standards of conduct.
Atingu also acknowledged the presence of leadership from the Uganda Law Society and the Law Council of Uganda, highlighting their role in supporting and guiding young professionals entering the field.
In her address, she underscored the duties of advocates to the court, their clients, and society. As officers of the court, she reminded them of their obligation to facilitate justice in accordance with constitutional principles, particularly the mandate to ensure fairness, efficiency, and substance over technicalities.
She cautioned that only well-prepared and knowledgeable advocates can meet the demands of the profession, urging continuous learning and diligence. While recognizing the duty to defend clients, Atingu stressed that advocates must never undermine justice, even in difficult circumstances.
“An advocate is like a high priest in the temple of justice,” she said, calling on the new entrants to act with courage, fairness, and integrity at all times.
Atingu further encouraged the advocates to contribute to societal transformation through pro bono work and ethical practice, noting that success in law is rooted in professionalism, honesty, competence, and compassion.
Representing the Secretary of the Law Council, Ms. Patience Biira Mutooro reminded the advocates of the Council’s regulatory role, noting that while it grants admission to the profession, it also enforces discipline. She urged them to remain patient, ethical, and committed to integrity, warning against the temptation of pursuing undue gain.
“Your reputation as a lawyer is built on integrity,” she said, also emphasizing the importance of decorum, respectful communication, and openness to correction.
Meanwhile, Mr. Emmanuel Egaru Otim, representing the Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, welcomed the new advocates to what he described as a noble profession. He highlighted discipline, hard work, and faith as key pillars for success and encouraged them to focus on impact rather than material success.
“Your legacy begins now,” Otim said, urging the advocates to measure success by the difference they make in society.
Earlier, Her Worship Fidelis Otwao, Personal Assistant to the Chief Registrar and moderator of the ceremony, described the event as a significant rite of passage, commending the dedication and persistence that led to the advocates’ achievement.
The enrolment marks the beginning of a lifelong journey in the legal profession for the new advocates, as they take on the responsibility of upholding justice and serving society.
