Before it was announced, many people argued that a Michael Jackson biopic was impossible.
The artiste was too controversial. Either the biopic would ignore the paedophilia allegations, pleasing his biggest fans (who believe he is innocent) while incensing his critics (who think he is guilty), or it would delve into the allegations, producing the opposite effect.
The undertaking was too risky. But then Lionsgate decided to take the gamble, and now, we have a biopic that has split critics and audiences. Michael (2026) is just part one of two, and it only covers a portion of the musician’s career.
It presents Jackson in the best possible light, which audiences are loving so far (97 per cent audience score). However, critics are less forgiving (38 per cent).
They felt like Michael (2026) was too sanitized, portraying Michael Jackson as a saint, and completely failing to explain the root of his demons. Hopefully, part two will remedy these mistakes. You can watch Michael in cinemas today.
