Kitara delivered a stunning blow to giants SC Villa, securing a decisive 2-0 victory in the Stanbic Uganda Cup, in a thrilling round of 16 match held in Masindi.
Late drama unfolded as Paul Mucureezi and Frank Zaga Tumwesigye emerged as the heroes for Kitara, clinching the win and sending Villa crashing out of the competition.
Zaga, who came on as a substitute for Denis Omedi in the 80th minute, wasted no time in making his mark, finding the net just two minutes later with a composed tap-in from a corner.
Mucureezi then sealed the deal for Kitara in the 87th minute, capitalizing on a rebound to dash Villa’s hopes of progression.
Despite Kitara’s dominance, SC Villa put up a valiant effort, with goalkeeper Meddie Kibirige pulling off spectacular saves to deny Omedi and Najib Yiga. However, their resilience was not enough to thwart Kitara’s determined attack.
Villa had their share of opportunities, with Cyrus Kibande missing the target with a header and Charles Lwanga failing to convert from Gavin Kizito’s cross. Kitara’s defense, led by Arthur Kiggundu, held firm, making crucial interventions to keep Villa at bay.
The victory marks another milestone for Kitara, who top standings in the Uganda Premier League. Kitara earlier eliminated Nebbi Central and Gaddafi.
Meanwhile, it’s the end of the road for SC Villa in the Uganda Cup, having previously eliminated Tawaii and Synergy to reach the round of 16.
Looking ahead, Kitara will shift their focus to the Uganda Premier League clash against Maroons on March 8, while SC Villa prepares for a derby showdown against Express the following day.
