The Right Reverend Wilson Kisekka was on Sunday March 25, 2024 consecrated and enthroned as the fourth Bishop of Luweero Diocese, succeeding Bishop Eridard Nsubuga, who retired last year.
Accompanied by Bishop Wilson Kitara of Kitgum Diocese and Bishop Simon Aisu of North Karamoja Diocese, among others, Bishop Kisekka, led by Archbishop Dr. Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, arrived at St. Mark Cathedral at 9:00 am for the consecration and enthronement ceremony.
During the ceremony, Luweero Diocesan Secretary Eric Ssebigajju presented the minutes of the Diocesan Synod, which appointed the Nomination Committee and elected two candidates for Bishop. The Diocesan Chancellor Apollo Makubuya read the minutes of the nomination committee, which nominated two candidates forwarded to the House of Bishops for election.
Subsequently, Bishop Kisekka took oaths of allegiance before Archbishop Dr. Kazimba and was consecrated, with prayers offered for him. Retired Bishop James Williams Ssebaggala, the caretaker Bishop of Luweero Diocese, returned the pastoral staff to Archbishop Kazimba, expressing gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him to stabilize the Diocese.
Following the ceremonial robing in his bishop’s attire, Bishop Kisekka returned to the congregation, where he was officially enthroned as Bishop of Luweero Diocese. Archbishop Kazimba emphasized the meticulous process of selecting a Bishop in the church and expressed gratitude that the process had concluded. He urged Christians to support the new Bishop and emphasized the importance of reconciliation.
In his address, Bishop Kisekka pledged to champion God’s Ministry, protect the environment, and combat issues such as homosexuality.
He was congratulated by representatives from the Buganda Kingdom, including Speaker of Great Lukiiko Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, who pledged to collaborate with him for the development of the diocese.
Additionally, Denis Sekabira, the Katikamu North Member of Parliament, urged the Bishop to prioritize reconciliation, acknowledging existing divisions in the Diocese.
President Yoweri Museveni, represented by General Katumba Wamala, urged Christians to support Bishop Kisekka for spiritual growth and pledged financial support for his ministry.
The ceremony marks the conclusion of a period of interim leadership following conflicts arising from the nullification of Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula’s election as Bishop.
A section of Christians has since filed a suit at Luweero High Court Challenging the nullification of Rev. Kasana and the case was forwarded to Principal Judge Flavian Zeija who is yet to dispose it off.
Despite ongoing legal challenges, Bishop Kisekka’s consecration heralds a new chapter for Luweero Diocese under his leadership.
