Katakwi: Ngariam Communities Rally to Fight Poverty Through Saving Groups

Following the multidimensional poverty report released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics in 2022, stating that Teso sub-region stands at 55.6 percent, vulnerable women in Ngariam County of Katakwi District actively involve themselves in saving groups as a strategy to eradicate poverty from their households.

Opus Jessica Catherine, chairperson of the Amorata-Ener savings group based in Ocooto village, Okokoma parish, Akoboi sub-county, urged the public to engage deeply in productive activities such as saving, farming, and educating their children.

Emmanuel Otoke, the parish councillor for Kokoma, advised group members to maintain the same spirit of saving to bring about change in families.

Jorem Obukui, the chairperson of LC3 in Katakwi District, stated that having saving groups will provide rural individuals with affordable financing to invest in profitable enterprises and contribute to development.

Hon. Obukui, representing Hon. Irene Among, the District councillor for Akoboi and Getom, made these remarks yesterday while handing over 19 dozen breakable plates and over 15 goats and sheep to Amorata-Ener saving group members in Ocooto village, Okokoma parish, Akoboi sub-county. Obukui also donated a tarpaulin to the group as an encouragement for better saving.

Peter Enguriat, the station manager for Joshua FM, who made a cash contribution of 100,000/=, stated that gossip and loan defaulters often disrupt groups.
